This is so true and inspiring and beautifully written. I loved the descriptions - the man who is like a butternut squash, tracing the alphabet on a baby's pudgy hand - Lovely, all of it. Thank you, Catherine, I can't wait to read more!

The butternut squash!!! So very good. This made me cry: “A writer writes—this is true. But a writer also reads. A writer learns. She is eager to experiment and grow….” So so true. Whenever anyone asks ‘if I’m working’ I always say yes. Because you can never know how your life will end up in your work, and I think it’s almost sinful to try to understand the process too much. There is such a misconception about what it means to produce. You must be alive in your life to produce, period. Start there and see what grows. And stop ask me if I’m ‘working.’ 😊
