I was not a very good Avon lady. SSS is the best! I too ended up in a career I never thought imagined. My husband opened a business. I learned bookkeeping from my father on the family farm and was a secretary by trade. I ended up being there 30 years and running it the last three. Definitely not happy. I do feel happy and fulfilled when writing. I always try to do more of it, but life happens. And I let it. That's why you inspire to me to keep writing.

I can relate to a lot of this, except my career was engineering instead of marketing or the law, like Ms. Obama. I was good enough to do it but didn’t love it. So I left when I got pregnant and never went back. But over the last 25 years I’ve scrabbled together a second vocation as a writer that feels both authentic and rewarding. Here’s to second acts!

This: "I was losing interest in my career—the one I never really aspired to." Right? Also, you were an Avon lady??????? Do tell!

It was 1985, big hair and "Skin So Soft." I was, as you can imagine, a terrible sales person.
